The Bundesarchiv (Federal German Record Office) constitutes as the archives for the centralized
tradition of the history of the Federal Republic of Germany and its legal and functional predecessors.
At various locations, people interested in history / history buffs can find authentic sources on German
history dating from prior to as well as past 1945. Searching the files [indeed] is part of everybody's statutory
rights.
The stacks currently hold about 300,000 linear meters of shelf space loaded with files and other written
documents, eleven million photographies in addition to one million maps, blueprints, drawings and placards.
German movies of about any genre – documentaries, news features, entertainment movies etc. - document over a
hundred years of cinematography. The movie department is located in Berlin.
It is the archivists' task to collate the huge load of written documents by the federal government departments
and the federal administration and to make those documents accessible. Insights into the archivists'
work practice, what measures they take in preserving the archives of the Federal Republic, can be gained
from a visit to the stacks, which contain the collective memory of Germany.
To top off the excursion, attendees are kindly invited to visit Emperor and Czar. Family Ties and Power
Politics. German – Russian Relations 1890 through 1910, an exhibition on German – Russian relations at
the dawn of the 20th century.
